Chapter Thirteen: Escalation

Cori and I sneak out while it's still dark. Charlie offers to come with us, but she knows she's got a camp and kids she has to protect even before I remind her.

“Just, be careful,” she says.

“You, too,” I say. I think about giving up my gun to her, and borrowing one of Cori's. But I suspect that where we're going we'll need it more.

We stop for the car, because the minutes it saves us might be precious, and stash it a few blocks from the gun store. We walk the rest of the way. Smoke is heavy in the air, heavy enough that at first I don't see the Jeep parked outside the gun store. It wasn't in the parking lot before. Staring long enough, I can make out at least three men inside. We circle around behind the shop and there's a small yellow Toyota pickup with the top of the cab chopped off, and men sitting in the bed.

I weigh our options, and I’m leaning toward waiting and watching until the red truck from the camp pulls up behind the store. The men I shot at get out, and start talking to the men in the pickup. I motion for Cori to follow me. We head back to my Chevy.

I pop open the trunk. I don't think it's been long enough since I've been inside that it's infested, but I don't really have time to worry over it. I shuffle the items in the trunk around, lift the spare, and retrieve three pipe bombs. I unscrew the caps, activate the receivers and screw them back up and hand them to Cori.

“Wait,” Cori says, “this is insane. And I'm a teenager and a Shadow Runner- I'm not supposed to be the voice of reason.”

“They can't let what happened at the camp slide, and they've got the numbers. If they're smart, they'll wait until the morning, raid the store and have truly superior firepower. Even if they're stupid, the only difference is they might lose one or two more than they would have without more guns. Either way, they'll slaughter the camp,” I tell her. “This is our one shot to stop them before they can.”

She sighs. She isn't happy, but she trusts me enough to go along with it- at least for the moment. “What do you need me to do?” she asks.

“Nothing,” I say. “Stay here, with the car, and keep the engine running. If things go to pot maybe I can lead them away from the camp while you sneak back on foot to warn Charlie.”

“It’s so cute that you think I’d go along with any of that,” she says. “Your options are pretty clear, here. You can tell me the plan and let me help, or I can follow you, and try to figure it out as we go- which is obviously less safe- not to mention meaning that we’ll be basically waiting for them to circle around us and murder us.”

I sigh. She’s right, at least in that I don’t have time to try to keep her safe.
